New Zealand earthquake Death toll increases to 144
The death toll from the New Zealand earthquake has increased to 144 and more than 200 people still missing. Police said one-third of Christchurch’s city centre faces demolition.
As 6.3-magnitude quake hit the city on February 22, the government declared National emergency on February 23.
Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee urged the stricken city to be realistic about holding Rugby World Cup matches in September and October after the quake caused widespread damage, including to the rugby stadium.
