Madras University launches Digital Literacy Project
The University of Madras has launched the Digital Literacy Project in collaboration with Rotary Club to spread digitally literacy in the community.
Inaugurating the project, Vice-Chancellor Dr G Thiruvasagam said the University is prepared to use its resources, faculty and expertise for the benefit of the community.
The project aims to enable adult illiterates, women of self help groups, unemployed youth, physically challenged persons and senior citizens to learn the use of computers so that they may benefit from various e-governance initiatives.
The Vice Chancellor released a special interactive software ‘Know IT’ with Tamil script and voice over to help people to learn on their own or with limited support from teachers.
The course includes modules on Introduction to Computers, Microsoft Windows, Basics of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Emailing and Internet.
Dr Thiruvasagam also announced that the University will start 10 community colleges on the first of September. He said 3 colleges will be opened in Thiruvallur District, 3 in Kanchipuram District and 4 in Chennai.
The aim of the colleges will be to provide vocational education to people in the unorganized sector with 100 students in each college. He said the University will give the syllabus, conduct exams and award degrees.
