Economy growth expects to 8.5 percent in current fiscal : PM

The Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh today announced 8.5 per cent growth is expected in this current fiscal.

Addressing his first national press conference after the UPA II took reins of power a year ago, Dr Singh said the first priority is to protect the economy from the global slowdown and ensure that the momentum of inclusive growth did not get interrupted.
He expressed confidence 10 per cent growth in the medium term target will be achieved as India has satisfactory savings and investment rates. In his opening statement in the press conference, Dr Singh said that we need a rapidly growing economy to generate productive employment and also resources to finance the ambitious social and economic agenda.

The Prime Minister said the government is determined to squarely tackle the threat of terrorism and extremism. He said the government has outlined its approach in tackling the menace. Dr Singh highlighted the achievements of his government in the last one year and reiterated the commitment to make every Indian literate and empower citizen after the right to education act as been enacted.

The Prime Minister said government is undertaking a comprehensive review of higher education and medical education. A draft national council for higher education and research has already been put in public domain.

He said social, economic uplift of the scheduled castes and tribes, other backward classes, minorities and women will continue to receive priority attention in government plans. Dr Singh said the agenda for the second term of his government seeks to strengthen the pro-people policies and programmes initiated by UPA since 2004. The Prime Minister was addressing the press conference when the reports last came in.
