Buddha Purnima, the birth anniversary of Lord Buddha is being celebrated today.
The President and Vice President greeted the people of the country on the auspicious occasion. President Mrs. Pratibha Devisingh Mrs Patil, in her message has said that Lord Buddha inspire us to follow the path of truth, compassion and serve humanity to affirm our faith in the eternal values of non-violence and universal brotherhood.
The Vice President Mohammed Hamid Ansari said that teachings of Lord Buddha are relevant for emancipating mankind from suffering and to ensure peace and happiness in the world.
In Bihar the day is being celebrated with much religious fervour and serenity. The main function is organized at Bodha Gaya where Lord Budha got enlightenment under the Pipal tree.
Monks of the several Budhist countries have thronged at Bodhgaya to participate in mass special prayer on the occasion of Budha Purnima which is the most sacred day for the Budhist all over the world.
AIR correspondent reports that the Bodh gaya has tastefully decorated and the whole atmosphere is reverberating with Budham Surnam Gachhami.
The Buddhist spiritual leader Dalai Lama is to participate a function organized in Patna on Thursday on the occasion of Budha Purnima . Dalai lama will inaugurate Buddha Smiriti Park.
The first of its kind park will house a 200 ft. Stupa containing relics from Japan, Thailand, Myanmar and South Korea besides two saplings, one of the Mahabodhi tree and other from Sri Lanka. Several monks of Buddhist countries have arrived at Patna to participate in this function.
In Meghalaya along with the rest parts of the world Buddha Purnima is being celebrated on Thursday across the state with great enthusiasm and gaiety. The Buddhist community in the state capital Shillong are organising the platinum jubilee year of celebration of the Shillong Buddhist temple.
The state governor of Meghalaya Dr R S Moosahari will inaugurate the platinum jubilee year celebration programme this afternoon. Several cultural programmes have also been scheduled to mark the 2554th birth anniversary of Lord Buddha.
In Jammu and Kashmir, the 2554 Buddha Jayanti – Purnima is being celebrated through out Ladakh with full religious fervour and great enthusiasm in a traditional way mixed with a touch of modernity.
Main procession starts from Chowkhang Vihar at about 8 hours and culminate at pologround Leh. The main function will be held at 12 noon in Pologround Leh.
